Gambier Island, and West Bay in particular is a small, friendly community that welcomes folks who appreciate the beauty of nature and the laid-back island lifestyle. The West Bay dock and beach is a great meeting place, where folks enjoy swimming in the crystal clear, warm ocean water, kayaking, crabbing, water skiing and paddle boarding. There are lots of hikes on the slopes of Mt. Artaban, and longer hikes up to the two freshwater lakes accessible by trail from New Brighton. West Bay on Gambier island is a peaceful haven, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and yet so close. It’s a 30 minute drive to Horseshoe Bay (West Vancouver) from Vancouver, where you can take either the Mercury or Cormorant Marine water taxi service, directly from Horseshoe Bay to West Bay. . They’ll have you there in under an hour! You can also charter a water taxi at an affordable price for big groups or for transporting very large loads. You can also take any of the BC Ferries scheduled daily runs to the Langdale Ferry terminal (40 minute crossing) and connect with the Stormaway foot-passenger ferry, that takes you to the government dock in New Brighton on Gambier Island (5 minute crossing). From there it’s a 10 minute drive to West Bay. Most folks barge a car to Gambier to leave on the island. From the Langdale Ferry terminal you can also catch a bus into Gibsons and points further up the Sunshine Coast for shopping, restaurants, professional services, etc.
